At the initiative of the landowner, the island of Järflotta became a nature reserve in 1968. Here you will find large sandy beaches, unusual in the Stockholm archipelago. The landscape is dominated by pine forest but there is also some cultivated land.

Gotska Sandön is a nature reserve where you can rent cottages and tents. You can bring your own tent but you have to set it up at specific places.

The museum currently has five steam engines, six diesel engines, several passenger coaches and goods wagons, dating from the early 20th century onwards. Stenstrand is a wonderful beach right out on Torö, south of Nynäshamn, and is reminiscent of Gotland. It has taken on almost mythical status among Sweden's surfing community but also attracts birdwatchers, families with children and the occasional honeymooners. From here you can see the open horizon and look out over Landsort.

The open horizon is best seen from beautiful Strandvägen in the southern part of Nynäshamn. Strandvägen was built in connection with the Olympic sailing events in 1912 and is now a popular walking area for lovers of the great outdoors.

A plague cemetery that is conserved since the 18th century when the plague was rife.

Landsort Chapel was a gift from Helge Axelsson Johnson and was consecrated in 1939.

Landsort lighthouse was built in 1670 and is the oldest preserved lighthouse tower in Sweden which is still in use. Enjoy a pleasant walk from the village to where the lighthouse stands at Öja's southernmost point.

Öja has luxuriant foliage and a rich bird life.

Landsort Chapel was a gift from Helge Axelsson Johnson and was consecrated in 1939.

The oldest part of the stone-built church was constructed in the latter part of the 12th century. The church was modernised i the 14th century, when the old chancel was demolished and replaced by one which was both taller and wider. The church largely gained its present appearance during the 15th century.

Torö Church is situated in a small valley alongside the main road from Nynäshamn and is surrounded by a gently undulating landscape of cultivated land.

Sorunda Church is one of the largest in Södermanland. The oldest parts of the stone-built church date from the late 12th century. The church was extended and altered several times up to the 16th century.

Nynäshamn Church was designed by Professor Lars Israel Wahlman and completed in 1930. The church sewing circle and the Friends of the Church had been collecting money and gifts for over 15 years to pay for the building work.

Stroll around among thousands of plants, from small shy violets to magnificent park trees. Ösmo Plantshop has, a part from a lovely garden, bouth a greenhouse, a large shop and a nice café.

Gösta's garden was originally situated on Lisö and run by Gösta Zetterqvist, but in 1993-1994 he moved his garden to this new location. The garden is now tended by Nynäshamns municipality, with new additions every year.

Few things look more powerful than a fully grown Clydesdale horse rolling at full gallop. Have you dreamt about riding these impressive horses? The dream can come true now!

The inlets that surround Kärringboda and Järflotta are beautiful and usually freezes early.

Svandammen turns into an ice skating arena during the winter. The central location makes this a perfect excursion goal for the whole family!

Sunnerby has an illuminated skitrack of 2,5 km. When there is a lot of snow the track is prolonged to aprox. 7 km across the meadows. Worth noticing is that the illuminated skitrack remains 2,5 km.

Kärringboda nature preserve is situated southwest of Nynäshamn and consists of 1 060 hectare land.

Fjättern offers several tracks. Start at Torö Sten or near the Shooting tracks.

Körunda offers tracks from 1 km up to 3,5 km.

Konstpoolen is an art gallery in the former building of Nynäshamns swimming pool. It´s a beautiful gallery, and with its big windows it´s very light, especially when the sun is in the south.

Carlo Folliero has his own gallery and silver smithy situated in a beautiful turn-of-the-century-environment in Ösmo (between the church and the rectory). Here you can see, not only permanent exhibitions, but temporary exhibitions by many different exhibitors.

The town's art gallery is housed in the library, with year-round exhibitions featuring the work of both local and invited artists.

Members of the Nynaäshamn's arts and crafts society often exhibit their work in the beautiful surroundings of Godsmagasinet, with everything from pictures to wooden handcrafts and textiles. There are occasional exhibitions by invited artists and a Christmas market every weekend during Advent.

Blåklockan is a craft centre on Lisö where you will find silverwork, art and wooden crafts. During the summer you can also enjoy a cup of coffee in the garden.

Vårdkaseberget and Grönbrinksberget in Nynäshamn offer good climbing at all levels of difficulty. The former is approx. 10-12 metres high, while Grönbrink is between 20 and 30 metres!

Enjoy Nynäshamn Golf Club's magnificent 27-hole course, appointed "Golf club of the year 2007"! A separate 9-hole course offers players without a 'green card' the chance to play on a proper course.

Östra Styran is an important resting place, particularly during the spring. Endangered species which can be spotted here include whooper swan, greylag goose, garganey, teal, Northern shoveler, Western marsh harrier, Eurasian hobby, honey buzzard, crane, spotted crake, redshank, long-eared owl and lesser spotted woodpecker. Occasional sightings of little grebe, bittern, water rail and moorhen.

The birdwatching areas of Örudden, Stenstrand, Reveln, Herrhamrafälten and Läskär can be found in the southernmost parts of Torö. A significant number of birds pass Örudden/Stenstrand during the autumn. ON good days in September/October it is possible to see large numbers of birds of prey, including rough-legged buzzard, sparrowhawk, goshawk, hen harrier, buzzard, merlin and kestrel.

Alhagen Wetlands is a treatment facility for clean sewage, and at the same time an exciting and verdant environment with a rich bird life. The endangered species include black-necked grebe, little grebe, teal, moorhen, crane, little ringed plover, lapwing, lesser spotted woodpecker and mistle thrush.

The Iron Age House is a copy of a real house from this period, traces of which were found nearby. Come and see how the Vikings lived!

Vårdkasen was part of the network of beacons which previously existed around the Södertörn coast as an early-warning system. It is one of Sweden's oldest authentic beacons and is built on a large mound of stones marking a burial site, probably from the Bronze Age. Nearby are the foundations of a house, perhaps the official residence of the beacon master.

What could be more restful than fishing? The area around Nynäshamn is popular for fishing for salmon trout and salmon, but don't be surprised to catch a pike or perch either.

There is a light breeze, and the kayaks glide silently towards our destination - a beach. The sun sinks slowly in the sky as we take a few deep breaths and our instructor leads us through a yoga session surrounded by nature. We finish with an evening drink before returning by kayak to round off a beautiful evening.

Are you looking to burn some calories, or do you just want to take a relaxing warm bath before entering the sauna? Ösmo Simhall (bathhouse), located in Ösmo 10 kilometers north of Nynäshamn, is the place for you!

Nåttarö is famous for its fine and child-friendly beaches. Take a packed lunch and snorkel, and enjoy a beautiful excursion in the archipelago.

Right out at Ören, in the south-west of Torö, is Torö Stenstrand, renowned for its beauty. The beach is known as the best in Sweden for surfing, and you are sure to see wind- and kitesurfers too! There are also fine sandy beaches on the north-west side of Ören.

Directly south of Sorunda (Spångbro) is Rangsta brygga, offering fine swimming with a diving platform to the left of the boat jetties. The bathing place is child-friendly and there is both sand and grassed areas - for those who don't like sand in their sandwiches!

There are many places to swim along wonderful Strandvägen. Choose between smooth rocks and pebble beaches. A little further out, in Lövhagen open-air recreation area, you can swim from the rocks or sandy beaches.

Nickstabadet offers a family-friendly, shallow beach in central Nynäshamn, with everything from a large and magnificent sandy beach, to jetties and large grassed areas for those who don't like to get sand between their toes!

A little further away, a little more sheltered and a little more secluded! There are many fine places to swim in Käringboda nature reserve, including at Gravamaren, which is also suitable for the disabled and small children.

A pleasant spot to swim in a sheltered bay with choice of rocks or sandy beach and grass. The approach to the bay is just 3 metres wide, making Hamnviken a large heated lagoon. Child-friendly.

Lövsjön is in the northern part of Nynäshamn municipality, approx. 4-5 km west of Hemfosa. The lake is approx. 2.5 km long, and narrow, in a wetland area with a continuous area of reeds and sedge. Once the snow has melted in spring, the floods provide a clear water surface which partly dries up during the summer.

There are 27 rune stones in the municipality, making Nynäshamn one of the areas richest in rune stones in Sweden. The rune stones can be dated to the 11th century AD and were often raised near to roads or fords. They are not gravestones, although they were often raised in memory of a relative. During this period the population increased, leading to a shortage of land, so the rune stones can also be seen as a form of boundary demarcation.

Alhagen is a wetland area where clean sewage is treated using nature's own methods. It is part of Sweden's largest network of wetlands, built primarily to reduce emissions of sulphur into the sea from urban areas.

Kustleden, the coastal path, extends from Nynäshamn up over Södertörn and around the islands of our beautiful archipelago. Take the opportunity to spend a day on Utö, Ålö or Nåttarö.

Hire a bike at Nynäshamn Tourist Information Office and head out! We have bikes to suit all sizes. There are many beautiful places to visit by bike around Nynäshamn. You can also take a longer trip out into the Sorunda countryside or the cliffs along Strandvägen.

Landsort, or Öja which is the real name of the island, is the southernmost part of the Stockholm archipelago.
